Can you briefly describe the area of business that you are working with, including your primary work tasks?
As a Finance Associate in the FP & BI departments in 3Shape, I have a lot of different looking tasks. But primarily, I have two main roles:
The first role is that I am responsible for designing the processes related to Financial Planning (budgeting and forecasting) as well as delivering reports to management, so they always have an up-to-date view of the company to make informed decisions.
The other part is as a “Finance Business Partner” for HQ Staff functions. There I work closer with some departments assisting them with data analysis, Business Cases and other ad-hoc analysis.
What are the most exciting and challenging tasks that you face in your job?
Due to the volatile market 3Shape operates in, my tasks vary a lot. With that in mind, the most challenging task is to understand a new issue quickly and find a good solution. This includes optimizing the way we input and gather data for budgeting and forecasting to minimize the bureaucracy for the organization and assist HR in limiting the manual work related to the Salary regulation process.
At the same time, we have to make sure that what we do is GDPR compliant. The very flat hierarchy at 3Shape also makes it exciting as you have easy access to top management. So when I have a new suggestion for improving a process or prepared an analysis, I get to present it to management myself instead of just handing it off to my manager.
How do you use your education in your current position?
What I probably use most from my education is the ability to understand numbers, assess a problem quickly and of course, having a good understanding of basic financial processes. As opposed to having the ability to do advanced regression analysis, which is more of an academic exercise.
Which three things are of most importance, when working in an organization like 3Shape?
1. That you have an open mindset – you never know what opportunity will arise, or what exiting task lands on your desk
2. An ability to understand a new issue quickly and use the knowledge you have related to the products; the way different people or the market works and to help come with the best solution
3. A good understanding of numbers – everything in my daily work can be broken down into numbers, so you need to be able to understand them and provide others with your insight.
Why is 3Shape an attractive organization for you to work within?
It is a young company with a great spirit and a product that actually makes a difference to our customers. I think that at 3Shape, hard work and the will to perform is rewarded with a lot of responsibility, freedom, good colleagues and a relaxed atmosphere. It makes going to work every morning a joy.
